How cooking grows liberty and self reliance

 

One thing that amazes about the modern society we live in is that very few people know how to cook.  I am not talking about boiling pasta, and throwing a can of sauce on it.  I am talking about buying basic staples, meat, flour, spices, fruits and vegetables and creating a meal.  It is almost comical to me to see my fellow libertarians, who state“they want the government out of our lives” but they literarily cannot feed themselves.  I am also not trying to throw stones, a few years ago I could not cook, anything but breakfast.

This is not because I grew up in a traditional southern household were men did not cook, in fact my father did most of the cooking, mainly because my mother could not boil toast.  Love her, and she tried, and we never went hungry, but we really preferred my fathers home made enchiladas to my mothers microwaved meatloaf.  That being said, I joined the Marines when I was 17, and ate at the chow hall, until I got married several years later.  I thought that marital bliss would mean, I would never have to cook again, I could not have been more wrong.  It turns out that my lovely bride, went to the same cooking school as my mother, and for a time it looked liked the kids might starve.

Thank go for modern society, just go to the store, buy and bunch of boxes, put them in the microwave and you have instance chow.  My problem was solved, and long as there is a Walmart, as Scarlet O’Hara said “ As god is my witness, I will never go hungry again”.  So years later we move to a farm, the closet store is 30 minutes away, which means shopping takes well over an hour, and in the Virginia summers frozen food did not always make it home. So it was time for me to follow in my father foot steps and learn to cook.

Where to start, well for us it was with Blue Apron, but any of the meal delivery services will do.  The first meal took about two hours to prepare, as I looking up on line what Blanching, and other cooking terms meant.  However, as the weeks went by I got much better and faster, and then I started to improvise, and create new things, after a few months, I did not need the service anymore.  I could not only cook, it turns out that I like it.  We now grow much of our own food, and I find that cooking often drives my planting.  So what does this have to do with liberty and self reliance?

I am glad you asked.  The average food travels more than 1500 miles to get to the store.  FEMA classifies most cities as food deserts, and say that they only have about three days of food on hand, in case of an emergency.  Most of the food that are in peoples homes cannot be cooked without power, without power McDonalds is closed as well.  Additionally, things like dried beans, flour, etc cost allot less and can be stored for much longer.  So they will save you money, and you can prepare them just in case.

So that being said, let me share with you two recipes that are easy and can get you started.

 

Whole Roasted Chicken:

What you need

A Whole Chicken (duh)

About half a stick of butter, or Olive oil if you are a butter hating commie

Salt and pepper

Thyme, rosemary

 

How to do it:

 

Preheat oven to 375

Rub the butter all over the chicken

Sprinkle spices all over the chicken

Place in chicken breast side down in a baking pan (I like to cover with foil to keep moist)

Cook for 2.5 hours, skins should be brown and juices clear.

Breakfast

Eggs Florentine

What you need

1 cup of milk

1 cup of cream

1 cup of Parmesan cheese or blue cheese if you are adventurous

4 tablespoons of butter

1 tablespoon of lemon juice

Salt and pepper

4 cups of spinach

4 eggs

 

How to do it

In a medium skillet melt the butter at a simmer

Add Flour and brown it for 1-2 minutes

Add the milk and cream allow sauce to thicken this should take about 8-10 minutes

Add cheese, lemon juice, slat and pepper, stirring to combine everything in the pan

Once the cheese has melted add your spinach an allow to it to wilt

Now take the back of a spoon and make little holes or pocket for the eggs

Crack the eggs into each pocket

Cover and let cook for about 10 minutes or until the eggs have a white top.
