In the past few months, I have known of a few people having to change their entire diet due to being bitten by the lone star tick. Being bitten by this tick means that a person will become allergic to meat.
How it works: An element of the tick’s saliva completely rejiggers the immune system to be acutely sensitive to the carbohydrate molecule galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose, aka “alpha-gal.” The allergy reportedly affects everyone, regardless of genetics. (Daily News)
Some might say, this is horrible!
While others might say, One less murderer!
Whatever your opinion is, all allergies are miserable. (I would know, I have quite a few allergies).
